Interpretive:
Applied:This component helped me understand the foundation of my topic better because on my first day of mentorship, I sat in on a crisis meeting with my mentor at a local elementary school. During the meeting, suicide rates in kids were discussed and she listed outrageous numbers just in the Pomona district, which was mind blowing to me! After the meeting, I ventured towards suicidal children as my topic because I found it to be extremely fascinating. Another example of how my mentorship was beneficial was during my many sessions of making calls to parents. Before making the calls, I am usually given a stack of referral forms that have been sent to their office. When I am asked to call the parents on the referral forms, in order to understand what it is I'm calling about, I have to read through the referral to see what it is that is being asked. A number of the referrals I've read through had something to do with their kids acting out and needing mental health assistance. There weren't as many, but there were still some where it seemed children were depressed and showing suicidal signs. Knowing that there is an issue with suicide just down the street from me sparked something inside of me to want to focus on suicidal youth. If it weren't for my mentorship, I don't think I would be at the same place I am now with my senior project.
